Climbing Your Career Ladder

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Moving up in your career calls for a combination of hard work and self promotion. It doesn’t happen by itself and is sometimes uncomfortable to promote yourself.

It takes guts to go up the corporate ladder. The daily grind of work can be stressful, and when you are up against people who are equally competitive, you need to make an even bigger impression. In today’s competitive world, the possibility of succeeding becomes more difficult and challenging. You work yourself to the bone, yet you still find yourself stuck in the same position with the same measly salary.

When killing yourself with work doesn’t bring you closer to your desired position, put on another layer of skin and gather up the courage to negotiate with your supervisor. All types of successful negotiations begin with being clear about what you truly want from the company. Being aggressive and pushy may just get you into trouble. Your supervisors demand respect, and even when they are at fault, you need to be the humble person here. The best way to negotiate is to show the higher-ups why you deserve the job. Yearly employee evaluations are always the best times to bring up a matter or talk about an issue. Be diplomatic and tactful when you tell them why you deserve the job. Never forget to mention your capabilities and highlight your strengths. People get promoted when they meet and exceed the expectations set on them. Devote time to doing your job well, and if you have been successful, it will be to showcase your quality of work.

So how exactly can you make your work better? Well, you need to take a step back and see how your specific duties contribute to the bigger picture. Research if you must so that you arm yourself with the skills needed to fulfill that dream position. Focus your research on a specific field. It helps to know the market trend, and when you display immense knowledge on a certain subject matter, your superiors will feel that you are able to make the right choice when the time comes.

Of course, part of every learning experience is making mistakes. You should not get frustrated when something goes wrong. Nobody’s perfect and neither are you! Accept your limitations and be open to suggestions from those with experience. Ask for help if you must because people will respect you more if they see that you are willing to learn. The makings of a great manager are in a person who knows how to delegate tasks. You need to know the value of your team and the people who make your job better. A great supervisor is a great team player. Get to know the people around you, share your talents, and learn from them. You can benefit a lot in learning from the strengths of others. With patience and practice, you will also get to develop that skill in you. You soon will find yourself more than efficient at the different aspects of your job.

When you dream of success, you have to plan for ways to achieve it. Keep your focus on the right path and develop the attitude of a go-getter. You will definitely get that coveted position if you work on your skills and your attitude.

Quick Exercises You Can Do Anywhere

5 Simple Exercises You Can Do Anywhere

With your hectic daily routine – getting ready for work, getting the kids ready for school, making sure your socks aren’t floating in the dog’s water bowl, a busy day at work, coming home and fixing dinner, cleaning up the house and getting everyone, including yourself, to sleep – exercise is usually the last thing on your mind!

Stress levels and obesity are at an all time high and health concerns are making themselves a priority in many people’s lives.

However, exercise is the one thing that can energize you to handle such a busy lifestyle with flying colors! Exercising reduces stress, helps you sleep better, and keeps health concerns at bay, while also boosting your self-confidence.

No More Excuses Allowed

It’s a good thing the human body is made the way it is, because there are many exercises you can do anywhere, at any time. All you need are a couple of makeshift weights you can find around the house and the physical weight of your body.

When exercising, remember to get a good warm-up and finish off with a slow cool-down. This is important to prevent injury and is easy to accomplish no matter where you are. Walking works well for both your warm-up and cool-down routine.

Here are 5 simple exercises you can do anywhere:

1.      Tricep Dips. Sit on the edge of a chair or bench with your hands next to your thighs. Lift your body out just in front of the chair, with your feet flat on the floor and your knees bent. Lower yourself down so your elbows bend no more than 90 degrees and push yourself back up.

  • Start off with a few small sets and build up from there.
  • Straightening your legs increases the workout.
  • Avoid this exercise if you have wrist or shoulder problems.

2.      Pushups. Everyone knows the standard pushup position, so let’s try some things to change it up a bit.

  • You can do pushups with your hands wider than shoulder width to get more of a shoulder and chest workout.

  • If you bring your hands together into a diamond shape near the center of your chest you will work more of the triceps and shoulders.

  • Working half pushups – either going only half way down and then back up, or starting from the floor and only pushing up half way and then going back down – will intensify your pushup workout.

3.      Crunches. Crunches are great for your abs if you do them correctly. Done incorrectly, they can put undue stress on your neck and back. To avoid injury, be sure to use the correct techniques.

·         The biggest risk is if you jerk your neck to give you the force to crunch. While doing crunches, keep your hands behind your head and your elbows back while using your stomach muscles to lift your head and chin towards the ceiling.

·         Once you’ve mastered this technique, try lifting your legs off the ground or assuming a bicycle position with one leg bent and the other straight off of the ground.

4.      Squats. Body weight squats are a great exercise you can do anywhere and a fantastic way to learn proper technique. Start off your squat workouts by lowering yourself only a foot or so. Then work up to deeper squats as your muscles become accustomed to the exercise.

  • If you’re feeling a bit advanced and in need of a more intense workout, grab two 2-liter bottles filled with sand and try performing squats while holding one in each hand.

5.      Calf Raises. Calf raises can be done wherever there is a raised surface, such as a stairway. If you need balance, hold onto the railing. Facing the stairs, stand with only your toes on the stair and your feet extending out past it. Standing straight up, lower your body down below the level of the stair and then back up onto your toes.

  • Even though it seems as if this is an ankle exercise, it also works out your calf muscles.

  • The biggest emphasis on this exercise is the ability to go from an extreme negative position with ankle below toes to an extreme positive position, ankle fully raised.

With these five exercises, you have a full body workout. Remember to pay attention to your body and take it easy at first. Soreness is a good thing, but pain means you need to stop. Try these exercises out today and feel the healthy difference of fitness on the run.

10 Tips for Getting a Great Night of Sleep

10 Tips and Tricks to Get a Good Night’s Sleep

A good night’s sleep is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. But it’s not just about how many hours you get, but the actual quality of sleep matters, too. After all, 8 hours of tossing and turning won’t do you any good!

When you’re asleep, your body and mind repair and rejuvenate themselves. The big question is: how do you get a good night’s sleep?

Here are 10 tips you can use to get the rest your body needs every night:

1.      Exercise. When you exercise during the day, your body craves rest at night. In turn, you’ll fall asleep faster and spend more time in the deeper, most restful stage of sleep.

2.      Eat earlier. After you eat, your body kicks its metabolism into high gear to process and break down the food. When you eat late, your body is still converting food into energy at bedtime. With all that energy, it’s no wonder you can’t get a good night sleep!

3.      Schedule. If you follow a consistent schedule where you wind down and get to bed at a certain time every night, your body will learn to automatically prepare for the event each night, resulting in a better night’s rest.

4.      Get some sun. Your internal clock is set when melatonin is created in your body by sunlight. In order to keep your internal clock set to the right time, be sure you get enough sunlight or put a natural spectrum light bulb where you spend most of your day.

5.      Turn out the lights. Sleep in a dark room, preferably pitch black. The light entering the room can either affect your sleep patterns or make your body think it’s bright outside and simulate a sunrise, which is more likely to wake you up.

6.      No TV. If you watch TV in bed, you might be stimulating your mind instead of relaxing it. Most shows on TV are geared toward engaging and stimulating viewers, not putting them to sleep.

  • Many studies have shown that even just having a TV in your room can disturb your sleep patterns, even if it’s turned off, because you associate your bedroom with a stimulating activity.

  • Replace your TV with a noise machine, preferably one with a white noise or crashing waves sound to block out other auditory distractions and lull you to sleep with its constant droning sounds.

7.      Read a book. Giving your mind time to unwind can be a useful tool to get a better night’s sleep. By reading a book, you remove yourself from your current situation. This allows your mind a temporary escape into another world, which can relax you and reduce stress.

8.      Avoid naps. The whole trick to getting a better night’s sleep is to be tired when it’s time to go to bed. If you take a nap during the day, when you’re ready to go to bed, your body and mind may not think it needs the rest. If you really need a nap, keep it to 20 minutes or less.

  • Naps also reset your biological clock and force you into thinking day is night.

9.      Journal. Writing down your thoughts can improve your sleep greatly. By getting things out of your mind, you can keep from mentally re-living the day or planning all the things you need to do tomorrow.

  • Keep a note pad beside your bed. If you wake up and remember something, write it down and get back to sleep, instead of worrying about it (or forgetting it) by the next morning.

10.  Keep the bedroom for sleeping. If you constantly do work or watch TV in bed, your mind may find it difficult to associate sleep with your bed. Keep it simple and use the bed for what it’s meant for.

If you follow just a few of these simple tips for two weeks straight, you’ll notice a huge difference. You deserve to wake up feeling refreshed and well rested!

Never Too Late to Change Careers

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Nothing can beat our spirits down more than a dead end job. But do you know that it’s never too late to change careers? Who says that our resumes have to read like a straight line? Nothing in life runs in a straight path, so why should your job?

Some Thoughts on Making the Right Career Change

We go to high school, go to college, and concentrate on our careers. The universities prepare us for the real world by enhancing our talents so that we do well in our chosen fields. We continue living this somewhat happy life but find ourselves growing more and more restless each day. We wonder, and then wham! The realization hits us like a bolt of lightning: we are no longer happy with our jobs. We realize after years of study that this isn’t what we wanted after all. We kick and scold ourselves, somewhat thinking that we should’ve thought more about this when we had all the time in the world. Then we wonder, could it be too late for us to make a career change? What if this is just a phase of our lives much similar to a mid-life crisis? Before we make any final decision, we have to think things through. Then, we have to stop punishing ourselves for the dire situation we created. We have to know that life is an ongoing learning experience, and regardless of age, there are too just too many aspects to learn in life that a lifetime is not enough to figure all these out.

Change is inevitable, and it doesn’t mean we cannot learn to make something worthwhile of the necessary changes that life presents us with. Our careers keep us on a steady path, but when we are no longer happy with it, it’s difficult to stay on that path. We cannot help but veer away from it. It’s human nature to stay away from the things that displease us.

No matter how much we earn, the feeling of fulfillment must never be undervalued. We need to achieve the feeling of true accomplishment if we really want to be happy. Once we’ve decided on what to really concentrate on and specialize in, we need to plan ways wherein we can equip ourselves with the skills needed to earn that job. Letting go of our present careers completely may be too difficult to achieve. This is our bread and butter at the moment, and we would unable to do anything if there is no income coming in. Plan and make the shift slowly. If we have to offer extra hours at night, so be it. If the end makes us happy, then we might have to work hard to reach it.

In making in a big decision in changing your path, you may need some help. You should never hesitate to ask for it. We need someone who can help us put everything in perspective. Seeking support helps us to stay afloat when we feel like we’re drowning.

Making a change is always a tough decision to make. Ideally, we should have made the choice even before entering college, but it is never too late for anyone. Nowadays, we all can make something of ourselves with the help of modern technology. As long as we have the drive to enrich ourselves with the skill, doors will always be open for us.

Fear of Failure

Overcoming the Fear of Failure

Wouldn’t it be great if we were all mentally tough and that we could take whatever life throws our way? Fear of the unknown is what usually holds us back from doing anything remotely interesting and different.  Usually though, this only takes the backseat to an even bigger fear, and that is fear of failure! Sure we want to discover something so innovative that we leave people in awe, but we also continually ask ourselves ‘what if,’ and that stops us immediately in our tracks.

Life is a game wherein we all take a gamble every so often, but what sets us apart from the winners is our attitude when we get into the game. We simply become too afraid and will settle for mediocrity simply because we do not want to be humiliated. We accept defeat and convince ourselves that the skill is just not in us. We should keep in mind that while negative thoughts create gloom, the energy radiated by having a positive attitude is reflected in our actions.

The same goes to our professional lives.  Some of us go to work, do our job, and basically do everything as a routine of habit. We are far from being satisfied with our careers but we carry on nonetheless. Why? Because that’s what we do and are familiar with. We have other dreams but keep them on the back burner because we don’t know if we have the right abilities and talents. If we do decide to pursue our dreams and do what we are most passionate about, we fear that we aren’t good enough and that we might humiliate ourselves in the end. Our life can become a sham with this attitude, and we definitely have to pursue our innermost desires to have a chance at happiness.

If you have a fear of failure, know that this is not unique to only you. Many other people dread the thought of losing. However, it is important to note that this fear can do more than keep us from being successful. It holds us back from living the kind of life we deserve. Often times, this form of terror develops over a period of time, often triggered by memories of sadness. Because we did fail in the past, we know how it felt when people laughed at us when we fell and couldn’t get up.

The truth is, we are good enough. We may not be talented in some areas, but surely there is something we are excellent at. We need to improve our self esteem and realize that life is all about experimenting. If we fail, then maybe we should look at the process and see what went wrong. Every good scientist knows that they have to come up with a good hypothesis before they test it.

We all have to be that scientist who willingly tries out every theory. The road to success is ridden with bumps, and it is only in trying will we realize which ones should be avoided. If there’s one thing I can assure you, it is the fact that people who keep trying despite their hundreds of failures will triumph a lot sooner than those who don’t give any effort at all.

So, how exactly can we all overcome fear? Just take baby steps but be brave enough to give everything a shot. Those who cop out will be those who will live their lives with great regret.

The Danger of Being a People Pleaser

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

As children, we are trained to do things for others and suppress our natural self-centeredness. We learn to please others as a way to form social bonds and make our way in the world. However, if we overdo it, we lose our sense of self and put ourselves out too much.

So, stop being such a “People Pleaser”!

Some people just can’t help but go out of their way just to make other people happy. They do their best to bend over backwards just to give in to the demands of others, even if this means forgetting about their own needs along the way. When you become this kind of person, two things can happen: either you will annoy other people because you try to please others too much, or worse, you will meet people who want your friendship just to get favors.

Do you find yourself to be this kind of person at times? Have you hidden your true self in order to survive the peer pressure? These people pleasers are otherwise known as adapters. A lot of these people who were willing to let others use them were most likely raised in an environment where their opinions were not valued. Or they may have been neglected too often that they see themselves as an unimportant part of society. In order to earn their place, they mistakenly thought that they had to forget who they were just to bend to the will of others.

People pleasers focus mostly on others and not what is inside their own hearts and minds. If you become this kind of person, you will eventually feel lonely and empty deep down. You may have earned friends, but deep down, you will always doubt their real intentions. You will feel like there should be more to life and don’t exactly know what you are in search of. You need to get out of this unhealthy pattern. Know that it is very possible to change so that you can finally feel better about yourself and know what you truly deserve.

First off, you need to learn how to say NO. This very important word is what frees you from the chains you’ve created for your life. Say it as often as you can, just to hear the word come out of your mouth. Of course, you can also be more polite about it, but nonetheless, you have to know when to stop and put your own needs ahead. You may also feel guilty at times, but you’ll get to see who your real friends are in the very end.

Your state of mind is well worth the effort because when you have a healthy point of view, those around you will be healthy as well. Your thoughts and emotions are an important part of who you are. When you are unsure of yourself and try too hard to become the kind of person others want you to be, you’ll lose what matters most: your dignity and self-respect.

Many people pleasers wrongly believe that nobody will like them if they stop doing things for others. If someone stops liking you just because you’ve learned how to say no, then chances are they weren’t really your friends to begin with. A true friend is someone who likes you for your true self, someone who stands by you through thick and thin. Only when you become honest about whom you truly are will you have this kind of friendship.

Don’t allow yourself to become anyone’s puppet. Free yourself from the fear of rejection because ironically, it is only then will you become loved and accepted. Who is running your life? The answer should be you!

Surviving Tough Times

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

It’s easy to feel like you’re hanging by your fingernails during turbulent and tough times. As the economy goes from bad to worse, your ideal future looks bleaker by the day. That’s why, you need to find ways wherein you can budget your earnings and save more despite the rising prices. In fact, you need to know now more than ever where your money goes. What you need is a plan to protect your money, health, and well-being.

If you are worried about where the economy’s headed, then count yourself as one of the lucky few. People who live their lives free of worries may one day find themselves knee-deep in debts and problems. Know what your expenses are. If you need to write them down, then do so. Make sure that you can account for every single cent. A list gives you a view of the entire picture. It’ll also give you an idea where your dollar goes. By tracking your daily costs in a diary, you will be able to see where you can cut back. You don’t have to buy something every time you feel stress. In fact, showing some willpower will give you a sense of control. If you are a member of a club or the gym, check out the deals they have for their cash-strapped clients. Get a discount when you can, and avoid unnecessary spending.

Nowadays, you also need to know that you can always have a job to fall back on. Especially with the recent economic difficulties, companies are now trying to downsize their manpower. Work hard and make the upper management know that you are an integral and indispensible part of the company. For starters, try to hand in your projects before the deadline. Make sure that you are getting the attention that you deserve. You can be the most industrious employee, but if your boss doesn’t know it, then you have nothing to gain from all your efforts. This, of course, does not mean that you become one of those people who like to brag a lot. You just have to document everything that you’ve done and regularly update your supervisor just so they’ll know where you are with work.

Just remember that in times of stress, you must never take your health for granted. Make sure that you have a way to release tension. Exercise is said to be the most helpful solution. When you work out, your body releases hormones that help you become more relaxed. Spend some time in the gym, or go for a walk. Whatever it is, just make sure that you sweat it out. Many people have sworn to the effectiveness of a workout. Just make sure that you have an outlet your anxiety. Keeping your issues bottled up can be very harmful to the various aspects of your life.

Lastly, enjoy the company of friends. It helps to know that you have a great support system by your side during your most difficult days. Even casually discussing your dreams to your friends and loved ones can be motivation enough for you to go into a quest to achieve them. The world can either be your ally or your enemy during these tough times. Make things work for you and ensure that you make plans for your future.

Enjoying Life and Celebrating Love

Celebrating Life and Love

Life does not always turn out the way we would want it to be. The things we wish would happen just don’t. Maybe you’ve been eyeing that pair of expensive pants in the store and have waited weeks just to save up enough money. The day finally comes when you are ready to make the purchase and then find out that they no longer have it in your size. These little nuances are often irritating, annoying at most. What about the more important things in our lives? When we lose something of value, we get frustrated and deeply hurt. Sometimes, we lock ourselves away from the rest of the world because we just don’t want to deal with it.

Then, as time passes, we realize that we’ve deprived ourselves from enjoying life and the blessings that we have. An individual who celebrates life moves past the negative. They avoid the nay-sayers, or if they can’t, hold little value to what they say. You just have to know that sometimes things go well while they can also go awry other times. You don’t have to feel the need to control every aspect in your life. It is in this acceptance will you free yourself from the unnecessary burden.

To celebrate and enjoy life and love, you have to realize a few things:

1. You need to pursue your dreams with passion. Do what you desire with all vigor and zeal. Don’t allow distractions to delay your dream and let your passion be your fuel.

2. Be proud of who you are. We may be far from perfect, but isn’t that the point? It gives us something to strive for. Life would have been so boring if it were not this way.

3. Count your blessings. We may not have everything we want, but we do have some of them. A loving family, great friends, steady job. Whatever it may be, at least we have something we can be proud of.

4. Live life with a positive attitude. Discover what you’re good at and use your talent to help you achieve your dreams. Ask friends for advice and let them help you. A helping hand or two does a world of difference.

Chasing your dream will not be easy. However, you have your entire lifetime to take action. It’s always worthwhile to pursue your dream, and age is unimportant here. A great life is a life filled with self-acceptance and self-love. Acknowledge who you are and be proud of how far you’ve come. Pat yourself in the back for every good thing that happens, and learn to share your blessings.

Believe me, when you share what you have and what you’ve learned, people will reciprocate your kindness. To be surrounded with love is but the greatest joy there is. Life is a gift, but it is up to you to discover life’s surprises. You need to welcome everything that comes your way, because this is the only way to know which blessing is meant for you. Learn from life and live for tomorrow. The past can no longer be changed, but the future can still be altered. The changes rest in your hands.

Controlling Negative Thoughts

Controlling Your Mind – Avoiding Negative Thoughts and Concentrating on Positive Thinking

How can you control your thoughts? If you find it hard to stop yourself from thinking about something, then this is an extremely difficult task to do. You can constantly tell yourself to stop acting on a thought, but to actually stop thinking about something, now that’s another story altogether. Your thoughts are more powerful than you’ll know. When you constantly think about something, you’re veering your life towards that direction. You pattern your actions according to what is on your mind. Therefore, if you constantly have a negative attitude towards everything, you’ll end up being known as the person with a dour disposition. Not a pleasant thought now, is it?

The skill of being able to control your mind is simply an act of constant practice. Much like your health, you frequently need exercise to attain your ideal weight. This is not something that can be done overnight. After all, it requires a change of your outlook in life and a readjustment of your personality. Whenever an unwanted thought comes to your mind, simply stop yourself from thinking about it any further. Then, you have to shift your focus elsewhere. Watching television or reading a book helps greatly especially if you need to stop it immediately. Some people believe that making oneself tired from thinking about an unwanted thought helps a lot in kicking the habit. What this means is that you have to come up with a mode of punishment every single time you do something that goes against your ultimate goal. Try this, whenever you find yourself thinking about something unpleasant, mark it on a piece of paper. Mount the paper on a wall and go to it every time you break your word. You’ll soon find it a great inconvenience whenever you have to stand up, walk over to that piece of paper to mark it. This, of course, is not an easy task, but it will give you the extra boost you’ll need to actually make an effort.

Remember, all your problems last only as long as you allow them. Yes, getting rid of your negative thoughts requires a lot of patience, but if you actually make the effort to change your way of thinking, you’ll soon find yourself being the master of your thoughts and of your emotions. Many of the successful people have done this. In fact, they have attained their goals in life simply because they were able to shift their focus to something more productive.

So, take control of your mind. Stop focusing and dwelling on your problems and on the pain that others have inflicted on you. It’s time to love yourself above all else and acknowledge where you are in your life at this very moment. Refuse to think about the past and plan for your future. After all, your future is what you make of it. As long as you go through things with a positive thought in your mind, your future can be as happy as you want it to be. You are who you think you are and you will be who you will yourself to be. Think about it!

Healing the Hurt in Your Life

Heal Your Life and Make it Better

Sometimes, we look back at the most difficult moments in our life and find that there are still some experiences that we have yet to accept. Getting over a situation as not as easy as we think, especially if we’ve been burned badly. A recent divorce have left some men and women unwilling to get into another relationship, a death of a loved one has some denying what actually happened, or a fight with a friend has left people bitter and resentful. Whatever the reason may be, these painful experiences can be traumatic. In fact, some carry the scars all throughout their lives.

Life has a way of revealing its secrets, and as cliché as this sounds, things really do happen for a reason. It’s easy to say when you’re not the one experiencing pain, right? Of course, but then again, we’ve all gone through some sort of hurt at one point or another. And as times passes, we do get over it and see the reasons behind it.

To activate the power of healing in your life, you must first learn the value of forgiveness. This is a powerful thing because it helps us get past the barriers that hold us back. You never forget the things that have happened to you. The memory of it is ingrained deep within your heart. Forgiveness is not about forgetting as what some people might think. Forgiveness is simply an act of acceptance. Things happened to you, and these have emotionally scarred you. Acknowledge the pain and learn from it. If a person hurt you terribly and doesn’t even show any sign of remorse, know that it is not your job to change that person. Just accept the way he or she is, understand the situation, and walk away, if you have to. After all, you don’t have to be a martyr to become a better human being. What will set you apart will be your ability to move on and not look back.

Your heart is central to your healing. Though you think with your mind, your heart feels the pain. It is there when you’ll know if something is just too unbearable to face. Long for peace in your heart and in your soul. Work at it and surround yourself with love. It is your heart that allows you to live in this world, and it is also that which gives you access to a multitude of options for creating the life you truly want to live. It also helps to bless the people you encounter on your journey because they will be a reflection of the state you are in. They can act as a compass leading you to the thoughts and feelings you need to foster. They will help you as you rise beyond life’s ups and downs.

You have to first understand your feelings before anyone can. Ever met a person who left you confused no matter how you tried to comprehend their personality? These are the people who don’t understand themselves. You can approach life by believing in yourself with no explanation needed. Or you can be scientific and pragmatic, baffled over the things you are unable to explain. Know that healing only comes when there is the willingness to accept. With the gifts that life presents to you, you also must learn to accept the fact that everyone must work hard and overcome hurdles to know the true meaning of happiness.
